MSG (Ret.) Charles Duncan Baxley, 72, of Cusseta, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, October 25, 2015, at Martin Army Community Hospital, Ft. Benning, Georgia. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00PM on Friday, October 30, 2015, at Main Post Cemetery, Ft. Benning, Georgia.
MSG Baxley was born in Columbus County, NC, on December 30, 1942, to Atlas Roscoe and Hettie Monroe Baxley. He was a highly decorated member of the United States Army, having served multiple tours in Vietnam, his most notable awards, three Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal with 1 OLC. He retired at the rank of Master Sergeant in 1990, after 30 years of service. A founding member of the Cusseta VFW Post #5000, he served as the Quartermaster. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gail Ruby Gray, and two brothers, Atlas Roscoe Baxley, Jr. and John Baxley.
He is survived by a daughter, Janet Gumz of Cusseta, GA; by a step-son, John Gray; a brother, Roger Leon Baxley, a sister, Faye Howes of Middleton, WI; three grandchildren, Christopher (Tiffany) Gumz, Kristi (Jason) Leutele, and Charlie Baxley; three great-grandchildren, Celice Gumz, Ava Gumz, and Audrena Leutele; a niece, Denise Baxley-Halbert and a nephew Glenn Baxley. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cusseta VFW Post #5000, 279 Old Louvale Road, Cusseta, GA, 31805.
