Charlotte Mathews

Mrs. Charlotte Mathews, 71, of Buena Vista, passed away on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at Phoebe-Sumter Medical Center in Americus, GA. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Friday, August 27, 2021, at Buena Vista Cemetery with Rev. Jim Cox, Rev. Raymond Smith, and Rev. Daniel Whitt officiating. Serving as active pallbearers will be her nephews Chuck Cook, Clinton Cook, Bob Mathews, Blake Mathews, Allen Mathews, and Dan Arrington.  Honorary pallbearers are Jimmy Wiggins, C. L. Parker, Roy Stewart and Adam Wiggins. Friends may visit with Mrs. Mathews on Thursday, August 26, 2021, from 12:00-6:00PM at Way-Watson Funeral Home in Buena Vista.

Mrs. Mathews was born October 14, 1949, in Sumter County, GA, to Harvey C. and Lula Mosley Jordan. She was employed with the Marion County Board of Education for over 34 years as the assistant librarian and then the bookkeeper. She loved gardening and growing flowers. Mrs. Mathews was a devoted member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church where she served as secretary.  She could often be found throughout the course of the day reading her bible.  Mrs. Mathews loved her dogs, Salem and Short Stuff. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Michael Mathews, and her half-sister, Frances McLendon.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years John Mathews; her son, Stephen Mathews; a daughter-in-law, Emily Rose “Sissy” Mathews; three grandchildren, Brett Mathews (Lindsey), Erin Root (Ray), and Ethan Mathews. Several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, 687 GA Hwy 30, Buena Vista, GA, 31803.
