ELLAVILLE, GA --- Chief Mitchell Eugene Ellis, age 56, of 411 Callaway Drive, Ellaville, GA died Thursday, November 18, 2010. Funeral services will be held at graveside, 3:00 PM, Sunday, November 21, 2010 in the Ellaville Cemetery. Rev. Ben Foxworth and Rev. Peter Vermeulen will officiate.
Chief Ellis was born December 9, 1953 in Chattahoochee County, the son of Margaret Ellis and the late Murray Ellis. He served with the Ellaville Police Department for 34 years, 31 of those as Police Chief. Chief Ellis coached League 27 baseball for 20 years, and was a member of the Ellaville Lions Club for 32 years where he had served in every office and was currently serving as secretary. He had also served as Zone Chairman for the Lions Club. Chief Ellis was also a member of the Peace Officers Association of Georgia, Peace Officers Annuity and Benefits and the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police. He was a member of Ellaville Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother, Chief Ellis is survived by his wife, Janet Johnson Ellis; two sons, Matt Ellis and wife Holly of Ellaville, Luke Ellis and wife Melissa of Americus, GA; two brothers, Roy Lynn Ellis and wife Susan of Ellaville, and Michael Ellis of Ellaville. Four grandchildren, Megan Ellis, Emma Ellis Mikaela Norris and Savannah Miller also survive along with three nieces and three nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be all law enforcement officers in attendance.
Visitation will be held Saturday, November 20, 2010 from 5:00 until 8:00 PM at Watson-Giddens Funeral Home in Ellaville. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Georgia Sheriff's Youth Home, P O Box 1000, Stockbridge, GA 30281, or to the Ellaville Lions Club, 525 Concord Church Road, Ellaville, GA 31806.
