ELLAVILLE, GA --- Mrs. Ethel Young Walters, age 96, formerly of Ellaville, GA died Monday morning, December 14, 2009 at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery, AL. Services will be held at 1:00PM Thursday, December 17, 2009 at Hopewell Methodist Church with burial to follow in the Ellaville Cemetery. Reverend Peter Vermeulen will officiate.
Mrs. Walters was born April 10, 1913 in Smithville, GA, the daughter of Charles Oscar Young and Mable Barrow Young. After graduating from high school in Smithville, Mrs. Walters attended Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, GA where she met and married Ralph Walters of Schley County. She became a resident of Schley County where she ran a farm and worked as a supervisor at Manhattan Shirt Factory in Americus. In recent years, she had made her home at Crown Health Care in Montgomery, AL. Mrs. Walters was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church where she served as Sunday School teacher and an officer in the UMW representing the church at district meetings. She received an award from the Methodist church in recognition of her service. Mrs. Walters also volunteered with the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society.
Mrs. Walters was a world traveler, visiting Europe, the Holy Land, the Philippines, Japan and Mexico. She served as assistant tour director on many trips in Canada and the United States, including Alaska. She also enjoyed entertaining and cooking for guest in her home.
Survivors include her nieces and nephews who she dearly loved. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Walters was preceded in death by her eight brothers and sisters.
Pallbearers will be the men of Hopewell United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Thursday, December 17 beginning at 12 Noon at Hopewell United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hopewell United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 22, Ellaville, GA 31806.
