Mr. Jimmy Powell, age 75, of Buena Vista, Georgia, passed away Friday, May 27, 2011, at his home. His funeral services were held at 3:00PM Sunday, May 29, 2011, at Union United Methodist Church with Reverend John Homer, Reverend Bill Harris and Clyde Powell officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Serving as active pallbearers were Ben Singleton, Brandon Welch, David Cochran III, Brad Powell, Lucas Singleton, and Luke Jernigan. Honorary Pallbearers were grandsons, Scott Valentine, Joshua Powell, Casey Shivers, and Jeff Holguin as well as Billy Powell, Myron Wells, Dr. Frank Catrett, Wayne Jernigan, Kevin Powell, Bobby Jones, Brandon Vann, Buddy Powell, and Gerard Powell. The family received friends at Watson-Tante Funeral Home in Buena Vista from 6-8 PM, Saturday, May 28, 2011.
Mr. Powell was born in Marion County on March 16, 1936, to the late Harvey M. and Clara Simmons Powell. He graduated from Marion County High School in 1954, and married Jean Pope Powell. He was a loving father and grandfather and a retired farmer who loved his occupation. He served on the board of the Agriculture Soil and Conservation Service (now Farm Service Agency) for many years, also served on the Marion County Tax Equalization Board, and was a lifelong member of Union United Methodist Church. He supported the Marion County Recreation Department because of his love for youth sports. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers: Wilbur, Clark and Hubert Powell.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Pope Powell, daughter Debra Powell (Rick Valentine) of Fortson, GA; son, Gary Powell (Amy), of Buena Vista, GA; four grandchildren: Jami Shivers (Casey), Laci Holguin (Jeff), Scott Valentine and Joshua Powell; and two great grandchildren: Jeanna Kate and Clara Grace Shivers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Marion County Recreation Department, P.O. Box 451, Buena Vista, GA 31803, or to Vista Care Hospice, 100 Brookstone Centre Parkway, Columbus, GA 31904.
