Mr. John “Jake” Wilson Cartwright, 83, passed away on September 9, 2020 at Phoebe-Sumter Medical Center. Graveside services will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2020 at 3:00 PM at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Americus, GA. Honorary pallbearers will be Greg Long, Nate Long, Michael Fierillo, Bobby Salter, Mark Shutters, Chris Slocumb, James Shutters, Ruric Slocumb, Dusty Williams, Ty Cartwright and Matt Cartwright. Due to Covid-19, face coverings are encouraged and please practice social distancing.
Mr. Cartwright was born July 4, 1937 to the late Carson Needham Cartwright and Thelma Mae Kearse Cartwright in Telfair County, GA. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having been stationed at several different locations working as an airplane mechanic and crash and rescue. Mr. Cartwright attended Plains Baptist Church. He enjoyed farming and fishing and loved his family, especially anything involving his grandchildren. Mr. Cartwright was preceded in death by three brothers, Howard Cartwright, Keith Cartwright, and Albert Cartwright; and a sister, Geraldine Gibbs.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Leona Cartwright of Americus, GA; a daughter, Colette Long and her husband, Greg of Americus, GA; three grandchildren, Jessica Long, Nate Long and Samantha Long; two sisters, Lane Pritchett and her husband, Billy of Canton, GA and Laurene Jones and her husband, Daniel of Oakwood, GA; a half-sister, Vaunita Ivey of San Antonio, TX; a sister-in-law, Mary Cartwright of Americus; and several nieces and nephews.
