Kathaleen Ann Banta

Kathaleen Ann Banta, born June 27, 1950, in Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2025, at Covenant Woods in Columbus, GA, after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Captain John Banta, USN; her parents, William and Rosemary Mathis; her sister, Rosemary White; her brother, Jack Mathis; and her cherished dog, Gizmo.

Kathaleen was a devoted federal civil service employee, working for the U. S. Forest Service in Lake Tahoe, California, where she served with distinction in the accounting department until her retirement. She held a Business Accounting degree from Columbus University. Kathaleen and John shared a deep bond of love and admiration throughout their years, both retiring at the same time. After retiring, they moved to Sevierville, Tennessee, where they embraced their well-earned retirement years.

Kathaleen and John loved traveling the world and always enjoyed attending professional basketball games. She and John explored many countries and formed memories that lasted a lifetime. In addition to her adventurous spirit, Kathaleen was a caring, kind soul who treasured her family and friends, and loved animals dearly.

Kathaleen is survived by her siblings: William Mathis of Parlin, NJ; Butch Mathis (Barbara) of Stamford, CT; James Mathis (Peggy) of Buena Vista, GA; and Betty Lounsbury (John) of Torrington, CT. She also leaves behind her two stepchildren, Scott and Joseph Banta, and numerous nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.

A private burial will take place in Knoxville, TN, at the Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, where Kathaleen will be laid to rest alongside her husband, John. The family extends their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to her devoted caretaker, Gloria King, for her loving care during this time.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to an animal rescue or humane society of your choice in honor of Kathaleen’s deep love for animals.

Kathaleen’s warm spirit, her adventurous heart, and her unconditional love will always be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Way-Watson Funeral Home, 1052 Dr. Deryl Hart Road, Buena Vista, Georgia has been entrusted with these arrangements.
