Mrs. Laura Jeanette Weaver Icard, 86, of Buena Vista, GA, passed away on Friday, April 15, 2022, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at Tazewell Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Truitt and Rev. David Chapman officiating. Burial will follow the service at Tazewell Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, from 6:00-8:00PM.
Mrs. Icard was born December 13, 1935, to Raleigh Buscha and Ruby Pope Weaver. She was a devoted member of Tazewell Baptist Church where she remained active up until her death. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Bobby R. Icard, by her son, Jeter Bob Icard, by a brother, Edward Weaver, and three sisters, Louise Tyler, Lorraine West and Virginia Nell Owens.
Mrs. Icard loved gospel music and enjoyed attending gospel singings with her husband, Bobby up until his death. She was also a tremendous Elvis fan, having traveled to Graceland for a tour in her younger years. Most recently during the Covid lockdown she enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and watching “old Elvis movies” and the Andy Griffith show. She was a devoted Christian who loved her family, friends and community. She always enjoyed helping others andaccomplished this by working tirelessly over her lifetime assisting with various fundraising events such as the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. She also had a special place in her heart for children. She especially loved working on the “Operation Christmas Child” shoebox ministry for Samaritan’s Purse in conjunction with her church and enjoyed collecting items during the year to send to children all around the world at Christmas.
Early on she and her husband, Bobby opened their home to care for foster children and later provided family daycare up until her retirement. She started out keeping one or two children and found it was her “calling” as she loved caring for children and never wanted to turn anyone away. As a result, Icard Daycare was born and over the years she provided much needed and affordable daycare for many families in the Tazewell area and surrounding communities as well. She loved all the children at Icard Daycare as if they were her own and they loved their “Net Net”.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ward and Loris Icard of Macon, GA; by a daughter and son-in-law, Gennie and Allen Gaskill of Buena Vista, GA; by her foster children, Brenda Waters and Dennis Willingham of Andersonville, GA, Truman and Lisa Waters of Americus, GA, Janice Waters Smarr of Americus, GA and Michael Waters of Andersonville, GA; three grandchildren, Kalen and Ashley Icard, Kory Icard, and Kody Icard; by two great-grandchildren, Dalton Icard and Olivia Icard; by a brother, Harold Weaver of Chattanooga, TN and a sister, Beverly Hudson of Del Norte, CO; a sister-in-law, Anita Weaver of Forsyth, GA; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tazewell Baptist Church, P.O. Box 540, Buena Vista, GA 31803.
