Mrs. Sherrill E. Prior Powell, 85, of Buena Vista, GA, passed away on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at her residence. A graveside funeral service was held on Monday, September 23, 2024, at 10:30AM in Buena Vista Cemetery with Rev. David Chapman officiating. Serving as pallbearers were Payton Powell, Patrick Powell, David Ellis, Jr., Dwayne Hale, Guy Grimsley, and Kenneth Grimsley.
Mrs. Powell was born in Ochlocknee, GA, on April 3, 1939, to Thomas Britt and Ollie Mae Rehberg Ellis. She was a member of Buena Vista First Baptist Church where she was on the Admin Council and sang in the choir. In later years, she attended New Providence Baptist Church. Mrs. Powell was a member and President of the Magnolia Manor Nursing Home Auxiliary. During her tenure as president, she oversaw the fundraising, building, and completion of the Chapel of Hope. A mother of four, Mrs. Powell loved cooking, especially pound cakes and pecan pie. She enjoyed gardening and working in her yard. Before her retirement, she worked alongside her first husband at Southeastern Batteries as an accountant. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Vernon T. Prior, Sr.; by two sons, Vernon T. Prior, Jr. and Everett D. Prior; by three brothers, Thomas Britt Ellis, Jr., Donnie R. Ellis, John Reed Ellis, and a sister, Sarah Ellis Baggett.
She is survived by her husband, Arthur Powell of Buena Vista, GA; two daughters, Cheryl Lynn and Marc A. Coleman of Alabaster, AL and Patricia Ann and Jerry M. Hays of Buena Vista; by two step-sons, Payton and Penny Powell of Roberta, GA, and Patrick and Tina Powell of Cherry Log, GA; a step-daughter, Paige Powell Mock of Buena Vista, GA; by a brother, David Littleton Ellis, Sr.; five grandchildren, Brian Hays (Emily), Nicole Hays Morrison (Kane), Jonathan Simmons (Alicia), David Neil Simmons (Mallory), Andrea Skates (Johnny); five step-grandchildren, Adam Icard (Julia), Mindy Harris (Hunter), Alex Powell, Chase Tyler, and Madison Powell; nine great-grandchildren, Landon Morrison, Will Simmons (Olivia), Kyle Digmon, Reagan E. Morrinson, Harrison W. Hays, Emma Claire Creel, John Michael Skates, Audrey Skates, Kennedy Simmons; four step-great-grandchildren, Luna Icard, Avery Pearl Harris, Adalyn Harris and Raeleigh Harris; and one great-great grandchild, Thomas Simmons.
